An augmented reality guide for the Seeing Picasso exhibition at Pace Gallery
Seeing Picasso is an exhibition of Pablo Picasso's artwork spanning the late 1890s to the early 1970s. On view at Pace Gallery - Palo Alto from Nov 2019 - Feb 2020, the show highlights Picasso's key breakthrough moments, which catalyzed a number of artistic movements and styles of the modern era.
In collaboration with Local Projects, we developed an augmented reality experience on iPad that helps guide visitors through the exhibition. The iPad app contextualizes each piece in the show by visually juxtaposing related artworks and providing audio narration from a Picasso scholar.
Note: original artwork is obscured on this site for copyright purposes.
When viewed through the iPad camera, artwork is identified via image / object recognition. The Seeing Picasso app responds by displaying virtual artwork adjacent to the piece in focus. The augmented reality visuals are accompanied by audio narration from a Picasso scholar.

Each augmented reality scene was constructed in Reality Composer and rendered with RealityKit. This approach allowed us to iterate while developing the experience and testing on-site at Pace.
